Written so that readers can relate, understand it, and feel it. Student uses the appropriate tone for the piece. For example: If the writing is expository, they have a formal tone not conversational.

Fluency ( Complete sentences, sentence variation, flow)

Every sentence expresses a complete thought and there is a variety of sentence structures and length. Effective use of transitions. Every sentence supports the topic sentence. (unity)

Some sentences express a complete thought. Some sentences varied in structure and length. Some transitions are used.

Few complete sentences and no variety of structure and length. No transition words are used.

Organization

Topic sentence tells reader what the writer is going to discuss. Supporting details support topic sentence and there are at least 3 supporting details. Conclusion sentence is either a restatement of the topic sentence, a call to action, or a summary of the paragraph.

Paragraph is missing one of the following:

  • Topic sentence
  • 3 Supporting Details
  • Conclusion sentence.

 

Paragraph is disorganized and difficult to follow.

Ideas

Student supports the topic sentence with logical evidence or examples. Response is clear and on topic.

Student supports topic sentence but does not use strong evidence or examples. Response is somewhat clear.

Response is unclear, does not stay on topic, and does not have any evidence.

Word Choice

Student uses exciting and vivid words. They avoid words like: things, stuff, and slang ect… Vocabulary is subject appropriate.

Vocabulary is subject appropriate. Some exciting words are used.

Words are not subject appropriate.

Mechanics

2 or less mechanical errors

3-5 mechanical errors

6 plus mechanical errors
